A Pause in Gaza

A chance to evaluate

Dear Friend of AFEDJ

The picture above was taken at Ahli Hospital in Gaza City.  Notice two things.  First the child has severe burns on his leg.  But he does not cry.   Also consider the exhaustion and sadness on the father's face.  The cease fire has provided a respite for Gaza families, but there are unforeseen effects as well.

Psychological scars, depression, PTSD, and other signs of stress will need to be addressed.

The number of patients has actually slightly increased as those who feared to travel now venture out and seek help.  Fortunately volunteer doctors, mostly surgeons, from Egypt, Jordan and Turkey have relieved some of the strain.

Hospital staff, who have worked non-stop for three weeks are enjoying their first days off beginning today to be with their families.  We're grateful to each and every one of them.

"We are exhausted, but we must begin to resume normal operations.  We must continue the services that the people of Gaza expect of Al Ahli.  We cannot rest yet."  Suhaila Tarazi, Director of the hospital, leads by example.  We honor her work and those who clean, cook, and provide caring medical attention in desperate conditions.

For a while, it was unclear whether the banking system was functioning properly in Gaza.  During this crisis, AFEDJ wires funds as they come in for the immediate use of the hospital.  We have confirmation that the funds are reaching the hospital and continue to be desperately needed for food, fuel and medical supplies.  Please visit our website at www.afedj.org to make a fully tax deductible gift that will do so much to provide comfort and aid.  Thank you.

From all around the country, help is coming

kids4peace boy Kids4Peace in Atlanta hosted a service last weekend where kids prayed for kids in Gaza.  They held it at the same time as ones in Jerusalem, Vermont and other communities.  The offering they collected came to AFEDJ to be sent to Ahli Hospital for medical supplies and food.  We're honored to comply.  Visit them at www.kids4peacceusa.org.

Vera Meier at All Saints in Richmond VA asked if there are AFEDJ mite boxes for Lent or other uses.  Great question and, yes they're available from the Episcopal Book Store at www.episcopalbookstore.org >Parish Resources>AFEDJ.  This is an easy way to involve your entire parish, particularly the kids and we hope many consider it.

AFEDJ is eager to share your ideas and pictures.  Send them to aklynn@americanfriends-jerusalem.org
