The Diocese of Jerusalem serves 7000 Episcopalians spread out over five countries including Palestine, Jordan, Israel, Syria and Lebanon. This is over 121,000 square miles. The first Episcopalians arrived in here in 1841. Over the years, many institutions were added to provide for the religious, educational and healthcare needs of local Christians. Today, the Diocese includes dozens of parishes, two major hospitals, a full service health clinic, 16 schools and a number of institutes for the deaf, the blind, the elderly and the mentally and physically disabled. In addition there several affiliated organizations in Jordan, Lebanon and Jerusalem. They serve the needs of all, regardless of religious or cultural background.
St. George’s Cathedral, located in East Jerusalem, is the seat of the Diocese.
In April, 2007, The Rt. Rev. Suheil Dawani was installed as the 14th Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem.
In a region torn by turmoil, Bishop Suheil wants to share hope through pastoral care, education and healthcare in an area where the light of hope is often dim. He is committed to striving for peace and reconciliation while promoting transparency and accountability in the management of his diverse Diocese.
